Yong-Hong

1828‐1912
A modern Chinese reform activist. His courtesy name was Chunfu. He was from Xiangshan (Zhongshan), Guangdong Province. He studied at the Morrison School in Macau, close to where he was born, and in 1847 (the 27th year of the Daoguang Era), he accompanied the school's principal, SR Brown, to the United States as the first Chinese student to study abroad. In 1850, he entered Yale University, where he was baptized and naturalized. After graduating, he returned to China and worked as a tea and raw silk broker. In 1860, he proposed a new government to Hong Renkan of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, but he did not participate in the movement. Instead, he cooperated with Zeng Guofan's Westernization policy in the Qing Dynasty, and in 1872 (the 11th year of the Tongzhi Era), he succeeded in sending students to the United States, but it failed after four years.

中国近代の改革運動家。字は純甫。広東省香山(中山)の人。生地に近い澳門（マカオ）のモリソン学校に学び，1847年(道光27)中国初の留学生として校長S.R.ブラウンにしたがって渡米，50年イェール大学に入学，洗礼を受け帰化した。卒業後帰国して茶･生糸の仲買いに従事，60年太平天国の洪仁玕に新政の提案をしたが運動には参加せず，逆に清側の曾国藩の洋務政策に協力し，72年(同治11)アメリカ留学生派遣を実現したが4年で挫折した。
