1828‐1912 A modern Chinese reform activist. His courtesy name was Chunfu. He was from Xiangshan (Zhongshan), Guangdong Province. He studied at the Morrison School in Macau, close to where he was born, and in 1847 (the 27th year of the Daoguang Era), he accompanied the school's principal, SR Brown, to the United States as the first Chinese student to study abroad. In 1850, he entered Yale University, where he was baptized and naturalized. After graduating, he returned to China and worked as a tea and raw silk broker. In 1860, he proposed a new government to Hong Renkan of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, but he did not participate in the movement. Instead, he cooperated with Zeng Guofan's Westernization policy in the Qing Dynasty, and in 1872 (the 11th year of the Tongzhi Era), he succeeded in sending students to the United States, but it failed after four years.
