The commodification of capital does not refer to the sale of corporate assets such as buildings and machinery, but rather to the relationship in which investments in real capital (shares) are given a price and bought and sold. As soon as the capital of a corporation is paid up, it is given a dual existence: real functional capital and fictitious stock capital. The latter capital, embodied in stock certificates, is considered a special commodity that generates dividends and is bought and sold on the securities market, separate from the movement of real capital that functions as machinery and raw materials.
