Herbalism - Honzougaku

A study that unravels herbal medicines and elucidates the history of drugs. Many traditional drugs have changed in name and origin over their long history. This tendency is particularly strong in Chinese medicines, and even today there are many products with the same name that are foreign, and it is often unclear which drug should be used. In such cases, a method of solving the problem using herbal medicine (herbal medicine study) is used. In herbal medicine study, it is necessary to clarify the original product from ancient times, as well as to mention the historical changes in the drug's origin and medicinal effects. Therefore, the literature to be surveyed will not only include herbal medicines, but also books from a wide range of fields, such as medical prescription books, history books, novels, geography books, and others.

When studying martial arts, the most important thing to pay attention to is the edition of the martial arts book you are using as a reference. The contents of martial arts books change as they are reprinted. Therefore, even if the title is the same, the contents differ considerably depending on the edition. It is best to refer to the original, but many originals have been lost, making this difficult in practice. For this reason, it is desirable to refer to as many editions as possible, but when there are differences in content between editions, it is necessary to gain insight into whether this is simply a transcription error or an intentional revision. In the latter case, it is important to know the historical background when studying martial arts. Examples of historical background include the political background, as well as the author's birthplace and place of study. In addition, in the case of revised editions, particular attention is required because the contents vary greatly depending on the editor. Even the items included in the revised edition of the Shennong Ben Cao Jing (Shennong Ben Cao Jing) are different. Another important thing to note in the study of pharmacopoeias is that many pharmacopoeias are written by second-hand citations, and it is difficult to say that their contents necessarily reflect the times. Therefore, knowledge gained from books should be understood in the context of the flow of historical changes, and having incorrect preconceptions will hinder correct study.

本草書をひもとき、薬物の歴史を明らかにする学問。伝統薬物には、長い歴史を経る間に、その名称や基源が変化しているものも多い。とくに漢薬にはその傾向が強く、現在でも多くの異物同名品があり、いずれの薬物を使用すべきかが不明確であることも少なくない。こういった場合には、本草学的に解決するという方法（本草考察）がとられる。本草考察においては、古来の正品を明確にすることはもちろん、その薬物の基源や薬効などの歴史的変遷についても言及する必要がある。したがって、調査対象となる文献は、いわゆる本草書のみならず、医方書、歴史書、小説、地理書、その他といった幅広い分野の書籍に及ぶこととなる。

　本草考察を行うに際して、もっとも注意すべきことは、参考とする本草書の版本である。本草書は、翻刻が重ねられるうちに、その内容が変化しているものである。したがって、同一書名といえども、版本によってかなり内容を異にする。原本にあたるのが最良であるが、原本が散逸しているものも多く、実際には困難である場合が多い。こうしたことから、できるだけさまざまな版本を参照することが望まれるが、版本によって異なる内容があるときは、それが単なる翻刻の誤りか、意図のある改作かを洞察する必要がある。後者である場合は、その時代背景を知ることは本草考察において重要である。時代背景としては、政治的背景のほか、作者の出身地、勉学地などがあげられる。また、校定本の場合には、校定者によって内容が大きく異なるため、とくに注意が必要となる。『神農本草経(しんのうほんぞうきょう)』の校定本においては、収載品目すら異なっている。本草考察において、もう一つ重要なことは、本草書のなかには、孫引きによって書かれた書物も多く、かならずしもその内容が、その時代を反映しているとはいいがたいということである。したがって、書物から得られる知識は、あくまでも時代的変遷の流れのなかでとらえるべきで、誤った先入感をもつことは、正しい考察の妨げとなる。
