Clown puppets. In the early modern period, Kyogen plays were always inserted between the various performing arts in the entertainment world. They were diverse, including popular songs, acrobatics, karakuri puppets, and boyish singing and dancing. Impersonations by the clowns of Kabuki theaters were particularly popular, and the Joruri Theater even made puppets that imitated the faces of famous clowns and performed humorous skits. Among them, the Fundoku, Sairoku, Taroma, and others were made, but the Edo Noroma is the most famous. Said to have been created by Noromatsu Kanbei, this puppet has a flat head and is bluish-black in color. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
