An insect belonging to the family Tettigoniidae in the order Orthoptera of the class Insecta. It is a small species of katydid, and lives on the leaves of bamboo grass in the shade at the edge of forests. Its body length is about 13 mm. It is a slightly thicker species among similar small katydids, with a slightly protruding head and large spherical compound eyes. The femurs of the hind legs are slightly thicker from the center to the base. There are green and brown types, and both types have black bases of antennae, parts from the back of the compound eyes to the dorsal side of the prothorax, parts of the forewings continuing to the dorsal side of the prothorax and the tips, tibias and tarsus of the forelegs, and knees of the hind legs. This striking color contrast is not found in other species, making it easy to distinguish. It is commonly seen from Honshu to Okinawa, and is also widely distributed throughout Southeast Asia. Adults can be seen in Japan from summer to autumn, and males make a jingling sound. The larvae have reddish faces and black bodies, making it hard to believe they are the larvae of this species. In addition to this species, there are several other grasshopper species found in Japan, including the pale grasshopper C. chinensis , found north of Honshu and in Primorsky Krai, the common grasshopper C. japonicus , found south of Honshu and in China, and the starry grasshopper C. maculatus, found widely from Honshu to Southeast Asia.
