A sea monster in Greek mythology. It has the lower body of a bird and the upper body of a woman, and the plural is Seirenes. It is said to be the daughter of the river god Achelous and the Muses Melpomene or Terpsichore. She was originally a maid to Persephone, but was punished by Demeter for not preventing Persephone from being seduced by Hades, and was given wings by the gods to search for Persephone, becoming a winged monster. Their singing had the power to charm and destroy sailors, but on the Argo, Orpheus played the lyre to counter their singing, overcoming them and protecting the crew. According to Homer, they lived near Scylla and Charybdis and harassed sailors, but Odysseus, on the advice of Circe, had his men wear earplugs and tied himself to the mast, escaping danger while listening to their songs. This is the original word for siren (flare). [Kazuhiko Tange] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
