The name of the battlefield where the Roman army won a decisive victory in 52 BC during Caesar's Gallic expedition. The ancient name was Alesia. There have been various theories about the location since the early 19th century, and the debate was fierce around 1870, but the most likely location is Alise-Sainte-Reine in the Côte d'Or department in central-eastern France, where an inscription bearing the name Alisiia was excavated in 1837. It was one of the centers of bronze manufacturing, facing the Celtic "Tin Road." The Gallic general Vercingetorix, leading an army of 80,000 men, held out stubborn resistance for seven months, but was defeated by Caesar, taken prisoner, and executed in Rome.
