Founded in 1881 with capital from the gold-stipend government bonds issued as a result of the abolition of stipends, the company also sought to alleviate the hardships faced by the samurai of the former Hagi (Yamaguchi) domain. It expanded mainly through its overseas factories in Korea, China, etc., and recovered from the losses it experienced in World War II and diversified.
