Emperor Fushimi

Japanese: 伏見天皇 - ふしみてんのう
Emperor Fushimi

An emperor in the late Kamakura period (reigned 1287-98). His name was Hirohito. He was the second son of Emperor Gofukakusa of the Jimyo-in line. His mother was Genkimon-in Inshi. He became the crown prince of Emperor Gouda of the Daikakuji line in 1275 (Kenji 1), and ascended to the throne in 1287 (Kōan 10). He established a precedent for the two lines to alternate in ascending to the throne (Ryōtō tetsuritsu). Until 1290 (Shoō 3), the retired Emperor Gofukakusa ruled as an innkeeper, and thereafter he ruled directly. After abdicating, he ruled as an innkeeper for both the Gofushimi and Hanazono courts until 1313 (Showa 2). He excelled in waka poetry and calligraphy, and had Kyogoku Tamekane compile the Gyokuyo Wakashu. He wrote a diary, Fushimi-in Goki, a portion of which still exists today. He died on September 3, 1291. His tomb is in Fukakusa Kitaryo, Fushimi Ward, Kyoto City.
