Nishizawa Ippou

Japanese:
Nishizawa Ippou

A kabuki writer and historical researcher in the late Edo period. His real name was Risuke. His alias was Ippoken. His great-grandfather was Nishizawa Ippu (1665-1731), the owner of a bookshop who also wrote ukiyo-zoshi and joruri. He ran the family bookshop and rental bookstore, and also experimented with gesaku (comic writing), kyoka (comic poetry), and haikai (comic poetry). During the Bunsei era (1818-1830), he wrote plays for the kyogen writers Nakagawa Issen, Nakagawa Harusuke, and Kanazawa Ryugyoku (the pen name of Nakamura Utaemon III). He first made a name for himself as a kyogen writer in 1830 (Tenpo 1), writing works for Nakamura Tomijuro II and Nakamura Utaemon III. In his later years, he handed over the family business to his brother-in-law and devoted himself to theatrical research. His scripts include "Keisei Chigoga Fuchi," "Hana no Ani Tsubomi no Yatsubusa" (Hakkenden), and "Keisei Hama no Masago" (Onnagoemon), but he adapted and adapted more than he created original works. His historical essays "Denki Sakusho," "Miyako no Hirune," and "Adapted Yoroku" are valuable theatrical resources.
