An ideal world considered to be in the heavens. It is considered the afterlife or the other world, and is often used in contrast to the present world or hell.

The dark underground world was thought to be the world where the dead went, but on the other hand, a bright heavenly world has also been thought of. The latter includes Valhalla, the palace of the Norse god Odin and the home of heroes, and the "City of the Sun" in ancient Mexico, the birthplace of nobility. Here, heaven is not only seen as a place where life continues after death, but also as a place that reflects one's social status during life and where rewards for contributions to society can be found.

Paradise for the Chosen

When ethics were added to this, the heaven where the good people go became more clearly distinguished from the hell where the bad people go. The ancient Greek Elysium was considered to be the place where the good people live after death. In the ancient Egyptian religion and the Persian Zoroastrianism, the dead were judged according to their deeds in life and were destined to go to either heaven or hell. However, in this world, the bad people often prosper while the good people suffer misfortune, which raises the question of whether God is fair. The idea of heaven provided a valid answer to such questions. The heavens of Christianity and Islam, and the paradise of the Pure Land faith of Buddhism are not only places where ethically excellent people go, but also the idea that even if you do not have any good deeds, you only need to have the "faith" of a child.

In heaven, one lives with God as a spirit or a reborn body, and in some cases one becomes a god oneself. There, beautiful flowers bloom in abundance, pure water flows, and endless music can be heard. It is often depicted as a paradise or utopia in a sensory sense. Generally, "cool breezes" are sung in hot areas, and "clean water" in dry areas, depicting things longed for in the area one lived in during one's lifetime.

Heaven is thus said to be the home of the gods and the home of heroes, good people, and devout believers among the dead, and it provides a major answer to the question of human death, but at the same time, it also determines how we should live in this world. If heaven did not exist, many people would live in this world in a more ephemeral and hedonistic way.

Building a Heavenly Kingdom and a Desire to Reform the World

In advanced religious thought, heaven is not necessarily something to be sought in the afterlife, but is expected to appear in the future of this same time, or is thought to exist within people's hearts. Heaven, which is sometimes identified with the "Kingdom of God" in Christianity, is such a world.

There are also "God's Kingdom" movements that seek to realize heaven in this world, not in the distant future or in the mind, let alone in another world. The Taiping Rebellion in China, led by Hong Xiuquan, attempted to build the "Taiping Rebellion" on earth. In Omotokyo, founder Deguchi Nao preached the rebuilding of the "Three Thousand Worlds," and Mokichi Okada of Sekai Kyuseikyo, which branched off from Deguchi, also established what is called "Heaven on Earth" in Atami. Movements that seek to build heaven on earth reflect people's desire to reform the world. For this reason, they are often suppressed by the establishments of the time. However, even if it is difficult to build it in reality, such movements often play a role in sparking off a new society and era.

天上にあるとみなされる理想的な世界。来世の世界、他界とされ、現世または地獄に対して用いられることが多い。

　死者の赴く世界として、暗い地下の世界が考えられたが、他方では明るい天上の世界も考えられてきた。後者のなかに、北欧神話の神オーディンOdinの宮殿であり英雄の住むところとされるワルハラValhalla、古代メキシコでは貴族の生まれるところとされる「太陽の都」などがある。ここには天国を、ただ死後の生命の存続するところとみるばかりでなく、生前の社会的地位を反映したり、社会への貢献に対する報酬がみられるところとする考え方がある。

選ばれた者の楽園

やがて、それに倫理性が加えられると、善人の赴く天国は、悪人の落ちる地獄からは、いっそうはっきり区別される。古代ギリシアのエリシオンElysionは死後善人の住む世とされている。古代エジプトの宗教やペルシアのゾロアスター教においては、死者は生前の行為に従って審判にかけられ、天国か地獄かのいずれかに行くことを定められた。ところで、この世においては、悪人が栄えるのに反して善人が不幸にあうことがしばしばあり、神ははたして公平なのかという疑問が生じる。天国の観念は、そのような問いかけに対し、一つの有力な解答を与えるものであった。キリスト教やイスラム教の天国や、仏教の浄土信仰における極楽は、倫理的に優れた人が行くところだけではなく、なんの善行がなくても、幼児のような「信」さえあればよい、との思想も展開している。

　天国においては、神とともに、霊魂または再生した体で住み、自ら神になる場合もある。そこでは美しい花々が咲き乱れ、清らかな水が流れ、たえなる音楽が聞こえる。感覚的にも楽園、理想郷として描かれることが多い。一般に暑熱地帯では「涼しい風」、乾燥地帯では「清らかな水」がうたわれていて、生前に居住する地域で憧憬(しょうけい)されるものが描写されている。

　天国は、このように、神々が住み、死者のなかでも英雄や善人や信仰厚い信者の住むところとされ、人間の死の問題に大きな答えを与えているが、同時に、それが現世での生き方も定めることになる。もし天国がなかったとしたならば、現世では、もっと刹那(せつな)的、享楽的に生きる人が多く出ることになろう。

天国の建設と世直し願望

進んだ宗教思想においては、天国は、かならずしも来世に求められるものではなく、この同じ時間の未来に出現が期待されたり、人々の心の内部にあるものとされる。キリスト教で、ときに「神の国」と同一視される天国は、このような世界である。

　天国を、他界はもちろん、遠い未来や心のなかの世界に求めるのでなく、現実のこの世に実現させようとする「神の国」運動もみられる。中国における太平天国運動は、洪秀全(こうしゅうぜん)を指導者として「太平天国」を地上に建設することを図った運動である。大本(おおもと)教では、教祖の出口ナオは「三千世界」の立て替えを説き、それから分かれた世界救世教の岡田茂吉(もきち)も、熱海(あたみ)に「地上天国」といわれるものを打ち立てた。天国をこの世に建設しようとする運動は、人々の世直しの願いを反映するものである。そのため、時の体制からは弾圧を受けることが多い。しかし、現実に建設することがたとえ困難であったとしても、そのような運動が新しい社会と時代とをもたらす口火になる役割はよくみられる。
