Four Parts Classification - Shibubunrui (English)

Japanese: 四部分類 - しぶぶんるい（英語表記）Sì bù fēn lèi

A classification system for Chinese books. It is divided into four sections: Jing, Shi, Zi, and Ji. The Jing section includes Confucian classics such as the Four Books and Five Classics, commentaries on them, and literal books, as well as language books such as rhyming books. The Shi section includes historical books and geography. The Zi section includes Confucian, Legalist, and Taoist scholars, as well as technical books on agriculture, medicine, and the arts. The Ji section includes literary books from anthologies of poetry to plays and novels. When father and son Liu Xiang and Liu Xin first organized the court's library at the end of the Western Han dynasty, there were six categories: Liu Arts (corresponding to the Jing section), Zi (Zi section), Shifu (Ji section), military books, arts and sciences, and methods and techniques. However, in the Jin dynasty, the increase in history books led to the separation of the Shi section from the Liu Arts, and as the technology section stagnated, the military books, arts and sciences were merged into the Zi section, resulting in four sections.

中国の書物の分類法。経，史，子，集の4部に分ける。経部は，四書五経など儒家の経典とその注釈書および字書，韻書など語学書，史部は，歴史関係書で地理も含める。子部は，儒家も含めて法家，道家などの諸子および農学，医学，芸術などの技術書，集部は，詩文集から戯曲，小説に至るまで文学書を収める。前漢末，劉向（りゆうきよう）･劉歆（りゆうきん）父子がはじめて宮廷の蔵書を整理したときは，六芸(経部相当)，諸子(子部)，詩賦(集部)，兵書，術数，方技の6類であったが，晋代，歴史書の増大により，史部が六芸から独立し，技術関係の停滞にともない，兵書，術数，方技が子部に合併され，四部となった。
