The original meaning was bamboo pieces lined up horizontally, but it has come to refer to narrow boards lined up with small gaps and nailed to the horizontal bars. They are used under kitchen sinks and bathroom washbasins. Recently, many plastic ones are commercially available. In the old shinden-zukuri style, the outside of the eaves was made of woven bamboo and was called sunoko. Even today, bamboo or wooden sunoko are often used for the verandas of Japanese-style houses, and these are called sunoko edges.
