A general term for the commercial guilds organized by kakocho belonging to the four fu (the Left and Right Konoefu and the Left and Right Hyoefu). They dealt in goods such as rice, sake, miso, lumber, items to be brought by the Emperor, charcoal for blacksmithing, sukiyaki handles, white cloth, madder, brocade, silk, kimono, paper cloths, medicines, Chinese goods, horses, antiques, birds, and scrap iron. The Konoefu and Hyoefu were responsible for guarding the Imperial Palace and guarding the Emperor's travels. According to the Engishiki, the Left and Right Konoefu each had 100 kakocho, and the Left and Right Hyoefu each had 50. 四府(左右近衛府,左右兵衛府)に属した駕輿丁が組織した商業の座の総称。米,酒,みそ,材木,引物,鍛冶炭,すき柄,白布,茜,錦,絹,呉服,紙折敷(おしき),薬,唐物,馬,古物,鳥,古鉄などの商品を扱った。近衛府・兵衛府は内裏の警固や天皇の行幸の警備を任務としており,《延喜式》によると,左右近衛府には各100人,左右兵衛府には各50人の駕輿丁が所属することになっていた。ところが律令制の変容に伴い彼らの存在形態も変化した。
