Pearlite - Pearlite (English spelling)

(1) A layered structure in which α (alpha) iron crystals (ferrite) and iron carbide Fe ₃ C crystals (cementite) are layered alternately is called pearlite. When the cross section of this structure is polished smooth and etched with nitric acid, only the ferrite corrodes and the cementite does not, so when magnified under a microscope, the layered pattern can be observed. It is also called pearlite because it shines like a pearl to the naked eye.

Pearlite is formed by the eutectoid decomposition of a solid solution (austenite) of gamma iron with carbon dissolved therein. That is, when an alloy of iron and carbon is heated to about 900°C, the iron becomes face-centered cubic gamma iron, and the carbon atoms dissolve into the gaps between the iron atoms. When this is cooled, the crystal structure of the iron changes to body-centered cubic, forming alpha iron crystals (ferrite). Since carbon atoms are hardly able to dissolve in these crystals, iron carbide crystals (cementite) are formed at the same time, resulting in the formation of pearlite, in which ferrite and cementite are layered on top of each other. If the alloy is cooled quickly from the austenite state, the layered structure of pearlite becomes finer. Particularly fine pearlite is called troostite.

(2) There is a building material called pearlite. It is a porous fired product made from pearlite (a type of volcanic rock) and is used for flooring and wall materials because of its low density and excellent insulation properties. Pearlite concrete is made by mixing perlite with cement to reduce weight.

(3) Perlite is a fired material obtained by crushing perlite and treating it at high temperatures. Because it is porous and has good breathability and water retention, it is used as a soil improvement material, soil for potting plants, soil for cuttings, and other horticultural compost.

(1)α(アルファ)鉄の結晶（フェライト）と炭化鉄Fe₃Cの結晶（セメンタイト）とが交互に重なり合った層状組織をパーライト組織という。この組織の断面を平滑に磨き、硝酸などでエッチングすると、フェライトだけが腐食され、セメンタイトは腐食されないので、顕微鏡で拡大すると、層状の模様が観察される。また肉眼では、真珠（パール）のように輝いて見えるのでパーライトとよばれている。

　パーライトはγ(ガンマ)鉄に炭素の溶け込んだ固溶体（オーステナイト）の共析分解によって形成される。すなわち、鉄と炭素との合金を約900℃に加熱すると、鉄は面心立方晶のγ鉄となり、炭素原子は鉄原子の間隙(かんげき)に溶け込む。これを冷却すると、鉄の結晶構造が体心立方晶に変化してα鉄の結晶（フェライト）になる。この結晶には炭素原子はほとんど溶け込めないので、炭化鉄の結晶（セメンタイト）が同時に発生し、その結果、フェライトとセメンタイトが交互に重なり合ったパーライトが形成される。オーステナイト状態からの冷却を速くすると、パーライトの層状組織が細かくなる。とくに細かなパーライトは、トルースタイトとよばれている。

(2)建築材料にパーライトpearliteとよばれるものがある。これは真珠岩（火山岩の一種）を素材とした多孔質の焼成品で、密度が小さくて、断熱性が優れているために、床材や壁材に使用される。パーライト・コンクリートはセメントにパーライトを混合して、軽量化を図ったものである。

(3)真珠岩を粉砕し、高温処理して得られる焼成物としてのパーライトは、多孔質で通気性、保水性がよいことから、土壌改良資材、鉢物用土、挿木用土など園芸用配合土として利用されている。
