The Gupta Empire reorganized the Indian ruling system that had developed since the Maurya period and established a bureaucratic system. It especially focused on governing the regions, and in the Ganges basin, it reorganized the local administrative structure by establishing districts (viṣaya) and districts (bhukti) based on villages, and established a system by placing officials in each district and district. Under this system, the cities of northern India prospered, and large amounts of gold coins and other currency were minted and circulated.
