A Chinese series. Compiled by Zhang Yuanji and others. Three volumes, 468 varieties. Published by the Shanghai Commercial Press. The first volume was published in 1919 with 323 varieties, the second volume with 75 varieties in 1934, and the third volume with 70 varieties in 1935-1936. The series selected four major classics, Jing, Shi, Zi, and Ji, and published them as facsimiles (photographic prints), with the aim of collecting the best editions available at the time, including those in the Hanfenlou collection at the Commercial Press, as well as those in libraries and private collections around the country and even those in Japan. Even if a work was published once, if a better copy was obtained later, it was published twice. However, although the position is that the older the text, the better the copy, the later texts are superior in that they have been edited, and the editions in this series are not necessarily considered to be the best today. It has also been criticized that some parts have been arbitrarily altered during the photo-printing process, but in any case it was a groundbreaking project for classical publishing after the Republic of China.
