...Population: 1,189,000 (1991). It was called Ekaterinoslav until 1796 and from 1802 to 1926, and Novorossiisk from 1796 to 1802. The city was founded in 1783, and after the railway was opened in 1884 linking the Donets coalfield, a major coal producing area, with the Krivoy Rog iron ore producing area and the Black Sea, industry developed rapidly.
