Forest climate

Japanese: 森林気候 - しんりんきこう（英語表記）forest climate

A unique climate found inside forests, a type of local climate. The dense tree canopy acts just like the ground's surface, and surface wind and rain are affected by the forest, so the conditions inside and outside the forest are quite different. In forests, most of the solar radiation is absorbed by the canopy, so the daytime temperature is lower than outside the forest. At night, however, the canopy blocks radiation from the ground, so the temperature does not drop as low as outside the forest. Therefore, the diurnal change in temperature inside the forest is smaller than outside the forest, and the daily average temperature is also slightly lower than outside the forest. Furthermore, wind near the ground inside the forest is blocked by the forest and weak. Rain is also blocked by the canopy, so there is less rain than outside the forest.

森林内部にみられる特有の気候で，局地気候の一種。密集した樹冠がちょうど地表面のような働きをしたり，地表風や雨が森林によって影響を受けたりするために，林内と林外とではかなり異なった様相を示す。日射は森林内では大部分が樹冠によって吸収されるために弱く，日中の気温は林外よりも低温となる。しかし夜間は，地面からの放射が樹冠によって妨げられるため，林外ほど低温にはならない。したがって林内では，気温の日変化は林外よりも小さく，日平均気温も林外より若干低い。また林内の地面近くの風は，森林によって妨げられて弱い。雨も樹冠によって阻止されるため，林外よりも少ない。
