A dam has an arch-shaped planar shape, and is constructed to transmit external forces such as water pressure to the sides and to the rock below by means of a horizontal arch action and a vertical cantilever action. In Europe, many arch structures existed before the Roman Empire, and it was not unusual to construct dams with arches.
