Okazaki Domain

Japanese:
Okazaki Domain
This was a fudai-chu domain with its government office (Okazaki Castle) in Okazaki, Nukata County, Mikawa Province (present-day Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture). After Tokugawa Ieyasu entered the Kanto region in 1590, Tanaka Yoshimasa was given 100,000 koku and expanded and improved Okazaki Castle. After the Battle of Sekigahara in 1601, the Tanaka clan was transferred to Kurume in Chikugo, and Honda Yasushige was given 50,000 koku in his place. In 1634, he was given an additional 5,000 koku, and in 1645, during Toshinaga's reign, a total of 6,560 koku was divided between his half-brother and younger brother. In the same year, Toshinaga was transferred to Yokosuka in Totomi Province, and Mizuno Tadayoshi was given 50,000 koku. During Tadayoshi's reign, a general land survey was carried out in 1649, new fields were developed, and the military system was strengthened. In 1664, 5,000 koku was given to his younger brother Tadahisa for the new fields. In that year, the domain's territory consisted of 51 villages in Hekikai County, 72 villages in Nukata County, 38 villages in Kamo County, and 4 villages in Hazu County. In 1725, Tadayuki was granted an additional 10,000 koku. In 1762, Mizuno Tadatoshi was transferred to Karatsu, Hizen, and Matsudaira Yasufuku was given 50,400 koku, and in 1769 he was transferred to Hamada, Iwami. Honda Tadaku was given 50,000 koku in his place, and he served as the domain's lord until the abolition of the domains and establishment of prefectures in 1871. From the beginning of Tadatoshi's tenure, the domain's finances were in dire straits, and in addition to borrowing from within the family, the domain requested financial assistance and a transfer of its territory from the shogunate. During the Kansei period (1789-1801), the chief retainer Nakane Hayato and others carried out financial reforms with the cooperation of Edo merchants, and the crisis was temporarily averted. However, during the Tenpo period (1830-1844) the domain fell into poverty again, and from the Ansei period (1854-1860) onwards, attempts were made to restore its finances with the assistance of influential peasant classes under the leadership of the feudal lord Loyalist.
