Père David's deer (English spelling)

Japanese: シフゾウ(四不像) - シフゾウ（英語表記）Père David’s deer

A mammal of the Cervidae family in the order Artiodactyla (illustration). Its large hooves resemble those of a cow, its head like a horse, its body like a donkey, and its antlers like a deer, but it is none of these, hence the name "Sibuzou" (four-legged animal). However, it is clearly a deer, and there is nothing particularly unusual about it, except for its strange fate: the wild population became extinct about 1,800 years ago, and a very small number were kept in the hunting garden of the Chinese emperor in Beijing, where they were transferred to Lord Bedford's garden in England around 1900, where they eventually survived.

偶蹄目シカ科の哺乳類（イラスト）。大きなひづめはウシに，頭はウマに，体はロバに，角はシカに似るが，そのいずれでもないという意で四不像の名がつけられたという。しかし，明らかにシカであって，野生の個体群が約1800年前に滅びてしまい，北京の中国皇帝の狩猟園にごく少数が飼われていたものが1900年ころイギリスのベドフォード卿の庭園に移され，最終的に生きのびたという数奇な運命を除けば特別に変わったところはない。
