A city in central Yamaguchi Prefecture facing the Suo Nada Sea. It was incorporated as a city in 1936. The city name means "Kokufu (Provincial Capital) of Suo." The urban area is made up of two districts: Torimae-cho, where Hofu Tenmangu Shrine is located, Miyaichi, a post town, and Mitajiri, which developed as a salt shipping port. The city is served by the Sanyo Main Line and the Sanyo Expressway. Modern factories for automobiles, chemicals, tires, etc. have been built on former salt fields, and the city's industrial shipments were the second highest in the prefecture (2003). Some of the city's attractions include Kokubunji Temple (the former grounds are a natural monument), Amidaji Temple, the ruins of Shikiyama Castle (historic site), Mori Residence Garden, Mukojima Raccoon Dog Habitat (natural monument), Mt. Ohira with its excellent views, and Nojima. Area: 189.37 km2 . Population: 116,611 (2010).
