Dumbbell Nebula

M27, NGC6853. A planetary nebula in the small constellation Vulpecula, south of Cygnus. It is the brightest planetary nebula, with a magnitude of 7.8, and was discovered in 1764. It is relatively close, at 720 light years, and spans 8' x 4'. It is called the Iron Flake Nebula because it resembles an iron slab with both sides missing from the disk. At the end of its life, the surface atmosphere of the central star became unstable, releasing about half of its total mass of gas.

M27,NGC6853。はくちょう座の南にある小さな星座こぎつね座にある惑星状星雲。惑星状星雲としてはもっとも明るく7.8等級であるので，いちばん早く1764年に発見されている。距離は720光年で比較的近く，8′×4′に広がっている。円板の両側が欠けた形で，鉄あれいに似ているので，あれい星雲と呼ばれている。中心の星がその一生の終りに，表面大気が不安定になり，全質量の半分くらいのガスを放出したものである。
