The greatest sculptor and architect in Brazil during the colonial period. His real name was Antonio Francisco Lisboa. He was born to the Portuguese architect Manuel and a black slave. In 1777, he became disabled due to illness and was called "Areijadinho (Little Invalid)." He was active in Ouro Preto, the capital of Minas Gerais state, which flourished in the 18th century, and produced architecture that further refined the late Baroque style of Portugal and powerfully painted decorative sculptures. His works such as St. Francisco de Asís (construction started in 1766, Ouro Preto), the Church of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos (1795, Congonhas do Campo) and its six rococo-style painted wooden figures of the "Way of the Cross" (1796-99), and especially the twelve stone prophets (1800-05) placed in front of the church, show profound expression that transcends the styles of the time.

植民地時代ブラジル最大の彫刻家，建築家。本名はリズボアAntonio Francisco Lisboa。ポルトガル人建築家マヌエルと黒人奴隷との間に生まれた。1777年に病気で身障者となり，〈アレイジャディーニョ(小さなかたわ者)〉と呼ばれた。18世紀に栄えたミナス･ジェライス州の主都オウロ･プレトを中心にポルトガル本国の後期バロック様式をさらに洗練させた建築と力にあふれた彩色装飾彫刻で活動。聖フランシスコ･デ･アシス(1766着工，オウロ･プレト)や，ボン･ジェズス･デ･マトジーニョス聖堂(1795，コンゴーニャス･ド･カンポ)とそこにあるロココ的な6群の〈十字架への道〉の木造彩色群像(1796‐99)，とくに聖堂前に配された12人の石造預言者像(1800‐05)などは時代様式を超えた重厚な表現を示す。
