Nikolaus Kabasilas (English spelling)

Nikolaus Kabasilas (English spelling)

A mystic thinker from the late Byzantine Empire. Some say he died in 1371. Born into a wealthy family in Thessalonica, he became Archbishop of Thessalonica after the abdication of Pope John VI Cantacuzenus (1347-1354). In the controversy over quietism (hesychasm) in the Eastern Orthodox Church, he defended the monks of Mount Athos, but he himself had more moderate ideas. His main work, Peritēs en Christō Zōēs ( Life in Christ), explains the possibility of spiritual union with Christ through the three sacraments of baptism, laying on of hands, and the Eucharist. His Interpretation of the Divine Liturgy (Ermēneia tēs thesias leitourgias) is a masterpiece in the history of European mystical thought.
