Athenian politician and general, from about 520 to about 468 BC. He participated in the Battle of Marathon, and became archon (consul) in 489 BC. However, he disagreed with Themistocles, who advocated strengthening the navy, on the issue of naval construction, and was exiled for ostracism (483 BC). Two years later, he was granted an amnesty and returned to Athens, where he participated in the naval Battle of Salamis. He was the Athenian commander-in-chief at the Battle of Plataea. He played a major role in the formation of the Delian League in 478 (or 477) BC. Source: Obunsha World History Dictionary, Third Edition About Obunsha World History Dictionary, Third Edition |
