A tributary of the left bank of the Rhine that runs through Switzerland. It is the longest river in the country, with a total length of 295 km. It originates in Lake Grimsel on the east side of the Finsteraarhorn in the eastern Bernese Alps, flows northwest through Lake Brienz and Lake Thun, and flows through the capital Bern and into Lake Biel. From there it turns east-northeast along the Jura mountain range and joins the Rhine on the border with Germany. It is navigable as far as Thun, and is an important transportation route for landlocked Switzerland, and many hydroelectric power plants are located in the upper reaches. スイスを貫流するライン川左岸の支流。この国最長の河川で全長295km。ベルナー・アルペン東部,フィンスターアールホルンFinsteraarhorn東面にあるグリムゼルGrimsel湖に源を発し,北西流してブリエンツBrienz湖,トゥーンThun湖を経て,首都ベルンを貫流してビールBiel湖にはいる。ここから流れをジュラ山系沿いに東北東に変え,ドイツとの国境でライン川に合流する。トゥーン市まで航行可能で内陸国スイスの重要な交通路であり,また上流部には多くの水力発電所が立地している。
