Gold parity

Under the gold standard, the value of one unit of each country's currency was legally set at a certain amount of pure gold, so the exchange rate of each country's currency was calculated by comparing these amounts of pure gold. This was the gold parity, also known as mint parity. During the gold standard era, 1 Japanese yen was 2 bu (750 milligrams = 11.5742 grains) of pure gold, and 1 American dollar was 23.22 grains, so the gold parity between the two countries was 100 yen = 49.845 dollars. Foreign exchange rates were based on the gold parity and fluctuated within a range that included the cost of shipping gold.

金本位制度のもとでは、各国の貨幣一単位の価値は法律によって純金の一定量に定められていたので、各国の貨幣の交換比率はこのような純金分量を比較して算出された。これが金平価であり、法定平価mint parityともいう。金本位時代における日本の1円は純金2分(ぶ)（750ミリグラム＝11.5742グレイン）、アメリカの1ドルは23.22グレインと規定されていたので、両国間の金平価は100円＝49.845ドルであった。外国為替(かわせ)相場は金平価を基準とし、これに金現送費を加減した範囲内で変動した。
