[Born] King Seongdeok 3 (704) [Dead]? A scholar and traveller from Korea and Silla. As a boy, he went to China and studied under the Indian monk Kongochi (posthumous name Daigukyo Sanzo, founder of Chinese esoteric Buddhism), who was based in China. He then travelled by sea to India and visited Buddhist sites in various places. On his way back, he crossed the Congling Mountains (Pamir) and passed through Kuicha, the location of the Anxi Protectorate, before returning to China in 727 to study under Kongochi again and then under Amoghavajra. He seems to have spent more than 50 years in China after returning from India, but his year of death and place of death are unknown. The remaining volumes of his travelogue of India, "Echo-o Gotenjiku Kokuden", were discovered by chance in 1910 during P. Pelliot's (1878-1945) expedition to Dunhuang, and are considered an important historical source for research on the Western Regions.
