A prefectural tax (→ local tax) levied on the ownership of automobiles. The tax deadline is April 1st every year, and automobile owners are obligated to pay the tax by May in principle. Standard tax rates (→ limited tax rates) are set according to the type of car (passenger car, bus, truck, etc.), engine displacement, loading capacity, passenger capacity, and whether the vehicle is used for business or personal use. In 2002, a special measure (Greening Special Measures for Automobile Tax) was introduced that reduces the tax rate on low-pollution vehicles with a low environmental impact and increases the tax rate on automobiles that have been registered as new for a certain number of years.
