Japanese: 召使 - めしつかう

Generally, it refers to low-ranking officials, men and women servants who were called to work at the imperial court, but here we will look at servants in Europe, particularly in England, who were engaged in domestic work. In Japan, servants come in a variety of forms and cannot be discussed in general terms, but please refer to the entry on "Genin." Historically, slaves played the role of servants in ancient times, and serfs in the medieval manor system, but with the disappearance of serfdom, domestic servants appeared who worked in and outside the home and received wages in return.

一般には，宮中に召されて使われた身分の低い官人や下男，下女などの奉公人を指すが，ここではヨーロッパことにイギリスの，家事労働に従事する使用人servantとしての召使を扱う。日本では，その存在形態が多様で一概には論じられないが，〈下人（げにん）〉の項目を参照されたい。　歴史的には，古代では奴隷が，中世荘園制では農奴が召使の役割を果たしたが，農奴制の消滅につれて，戸内戸外の家事労働に従事し，その代償として賃金を取得する家事使用人が現れた。
