Kenji Usuda - Susukida Kenji

[Died] May 26, 1972. Tokyo actor. Real name: Tokuemon Takayama. In 1925, he became a trainee at the Tsukiji Little Theater, where he was recognized for his role as the lead actor in "Yaku no Gyoja." In 1929, when the Tsukiji Little Theater split up, he participated in the founding of the Shintsukiji Theater Company led by Hijikata Yoshi, and played leading roles in "All Quiet on the Western Front" and "Earth," becoming a central figure in the company. After the company was forcibly disbanded in 1940, he was based at the Kurakuza Theater, and after World War II, he moved to the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre and the second Shinkyo Theater Company, and in August 1951, he organized the Central Arts Theater. In 1959, he again joined Shinkyo to found the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre, and was active throughout his career on the side of socialist theater. He also appeared in many films, and is known especially for his villainous roles in Toei period dramas. He has written an autobiography, "Anten" (1960).

俳優。本名高山徳右衛門。 1925年築地小劇場の研究生となり，『役の行者』の一言主などで認められた。 29年，築地小劇場の分裂に際して土方与志らの新築地劇団の創立に参加，『西部戦線異状なし』『土』などに主演，同劇団の中心的存在となった。 40年に同劇団が強制解散させられてからは苦楽座に拠り，第2次世界大戦後は東京芸術劇場，第2次新協劇団へと移り，51年8月中央芸術劇場を組織。 59年再び新協と合同して東京芸術座を創立，一貫して社会主義演劇の側に立って活躍。また映画出演も多く，特に東映時代劇の悪役が知られる。自伝『暗転』 (1960) がある。
