…In the Edo period, the preference for Chinese calligraphy paper spread among literati, and from that time on, attempts were made in Japan to reproduce Chinese calligraphy paper, but they ended without any major development. Around 1948, when imports from China were cut off, Ken Ichise studied Chinese paper in Nishijima, Nakatomi-cho, Minamikoma-gun, Yamanashi Prefecture, together with calligrapher Etsudo Takeda, which led to the start of Koshu Gasenshi, followed by Inshu Gasenshi (Saji Village, Yazu-gun, Tottori Prefecture and Aoya Town, Keta-gun) in the early 1950s, and then Shodo Hanshi (Improved Hanshi) in Kawanoe City, Ehime Prefecture, and the production of Chinese-style calligraphy paper rapidly developed in Japan. Koshu Gasenshi and Kawanoe's Shodo Hanshi use a lot of recycled Mitsumata paper, while Inshu Gasenshi is characterized by a mixture of many types of wood pulp and rice straw and wheat straw, which are locally called grass. …

…江戸時代に文人の間に,中国の書道用紙を好む趣味が広がったので,そのころから日本でも中国の書道用紙を再現する試みは行われたが,大きく発展することなしに終わっていた。1948年ころ,中国からの輸入が途絶した状態のもとで,山梨県南巨摩郡中富町西島で一瀬憲が,書家の竹田悦堂とともに中国紙を研究したのが機縁となって,甲州画仙紙が始められ,次いで昭和30年代の初めに因州画仙紙(鳥取県八頭郡佐治村と気高郡青谷町)が起こり,次いで書道半紙(改良半紙)の愛媛県川之江市などと,日本に急速に中国風の書道用紙の生産が発展した。甲州画仙紙,川之江の書道半紙はミツマタの古紙を多く使い,因州画仙紙は数多くの種類の木材パルプと地元で草とよぶ稲わらや麦わらを混ぜるのを特色としている。…
