(1) A military chief in ancient China. In the Qin dynasty, he was one of the Three Dukes, and the Han dynasty followed suit, but he was not a permanent official. Under Emperor Wu of the Former Han dynasty, he was renamed Da Sima, but in the Later Han dynasty, he was called Taiwei again. He was appointed as one of the Three Dukes in the Sui and Tang dynasties, but he no longer had any real power. (2) The highest-ranking lieutenant in the military.
