Almeria (English spelling)
Almeria is the capital of the province of Almeria in Andalusia, in southern Spain. It is located about 100 km southeast of Granada. It is a port city facing the Bay of Almeria with steep mountains at its back. The port has flourished since Roman times, and is currently bustling especially from August to December when oranges and grapes are shipped. Its industries include chemicals, metal processing, and canning. The ruins of San Cristobal Castle, built by the Moors, stand on a hill overlooking the town, and other attractions include the Gothic cathedral (1489), a museum, and a historical research institute. Facing the Costa del Sol (Coast of the Sun), it is warm enough to swim all year round, and is known as a winter resort, but since 1960 it has often been used as a filming location for movies, and hotels and airport facilities have been developed. Population: 153,288 (estimated 1991).

Armeria vulgaris ( Statice armeria ) ; thrift

A perennial plant of the Plumageceae family, it grows naturally in cold regions of the Northern Hemisphere, such as North America, Europe, and the Kuril Islands. It is about 15 cm tall, has thin leaves growing at the base, and produces numerous flower stalks from the center in March and April. The inflorescence is small and spherical, with many dry, membranous flowers in pink, white, and purple-red. It is cold-resistant, and is often used to decorate the edges of flower beds or in pots. In Japan, it is called Hamakanzashi, and is also known as Matsubakanzashi.
