Kasanohara

Located in the center of the Osumi Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture, this plateau is the largest in the prefecture. It is roughly trapezoidal, stretching 9 kilometers from east to west and 12 kilometers from north to south. The total area is about 90 square kilometers, with some areas being incised valleys. It ranges in elevation from 30 to 170 meters, and covers Kanoya City and Kimotsuki Town. It is surrounded by the Kimotsuki River, Kushira River, and Kanoya River, and forms steep cliffs that connect to the lowlands, but the plateau is very flat except in some areas. Except for the areas near the incised valleys and the end of the plateau, the groundwater level is low, making it an extremely water-scarce area. As a result, development was delayed, and full-scale development work did not begin until after the construction of a water supply system in 1927 (Showa 2) and a land consolidation project in 1934. In 1967, Takakuma Dam was constructed upstream of the Kimotsuki River, and farmland irrigation projects were promoted, and modern farming finally became established.

鹿児島県大隅半島(おおすみはんとう)中央部にある同県最大のシラス台地。東西約9キロメートル、南北約12キロメートルでほぼ台形をなす。全体の面積は約90平方キロメートルであるが、一部に開析谷が入り込む。標高30～170メートルに及び、鹿屋市(かのやし)、肝付町(きもつきちょう)にわたる。四周を肝属(きもつき)川、串良川、鹿屋川に開析され、急崖(きゅうがい)をなして低地に連なるが、台地面は一部を除き非常に平坦(へいたん)である。開析谷付近や台地末端部を除くと地下水位が低く極度な乏水地域であった。そのため開発は遅れ、本格的な開発事業は1927年（昭和2）の上水道、1934年の耕地整理事業以後のことである。1967年（昭和42）肝属川上流に高隈ダム(たかくまだむ)が建設され、畑地灌漑(かんがい)事業が推進されるに至ってやっと近代的営農が定着した。
