Commonly known as "The Peony Lantern." (1) A work of human interest story. In 1666 (Kanbun 6), Azai Ryoi adapted "The New Tale of the Jian Lantern" (Sento Shinwa) by Soukitsu (Qu You, 1341-1427) of Wushan, China, as "The Fairy Tale Maid." The chapter "The Peony Lantern" was also adapted by Santo Kyoden and Tsuruya Nanboku, but was created by San'yutei Encho, a master of human interest stories in the Meiji period, as "The Ghost Story of the Peony Lantern." Otsuyu, the daughter of Iijima Heizaemon, a samurai of Kojimachi, fell in love with Hagiwara Shinzaburou, but her father did not forgive her. She died of her love and became a ghost, and every night she visited Shinzaburou carrying a peony lantern. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
