Tadao Shizuki

Japanese: 志筑忠雄 - しづきただお
Tadao Shizuki
Born in 1760. Nagasaki
[Died] July 9, 1806 (Bunka 3). A Dutch scholar in the mid-Edo period in Nagasaki. His real surname was Nakano. His given name was Eichou, later Tadao, and he was commonly known as Chujiro and Ryuho. He was the adopted son of the Dutch interpreter Shizuki Magojiro. He became a training interpreter for the Netherlands in 1776 (An'ei 5), but resigned the following year. He received instruction in Dutch from Motoki Ryoei, and made an effort to translate Dutch books. He wrote the Dutch grammar books Oran Kotohinko and Jujiko. His main translation, Rekisho Shinsho, was a translation of the Dutch translation of an astronomy book by the Englishman John Keel (1671-1721), and was the first to introduce Nicolaus Copernicus' theory of the solar system and Isaac Newton's theory of gravitation to Japan. His originality can be seen in the appendix to the book, Konton Bunban Zusetsu. In addition, works such as Bankoku Kanki, Luzhia Zhi Fu Lu, and Ikoku Ron were translations that introduced information about overseas geography and the world situation, and were transcribed and circulated.
