Asti - Asti (English spelling)

The capital of Asti Province in the Piedmont region in northwest Italy. Population: 70,598 (2001 census preliminary figure). Located on the Tanaro River. Developed as an autonomous city during the Roman era, it was the seat of a bishopric in the 5th century. From the 13th to 15th centuries, it prospered remarkably as a key transportation point between Italy and France. The prosperity of those days can be seen in the Gothic cathedral and nobleman's mansions that still stand today. Industries such as machinery and food developed, and the city is particularly famous for its wine production.

イタリア北西部、ピエモンテ州アスティ県の県都。人口7万0598（2001国勢調査速報値）。タナロ川沿いに位置する。ローマ時代に自治市として発展、5世紀には司教座が置かれた。13～15世紀には、イタリア―フランス間の交通の要地として著しい繁栄をみた。今日なお存在するゴシック式の大聖堂や貴族の館(やかた)に、当時の繁栄ぶりをうかがうことができる。機械、食品などの工業が発達する。また、とりわけぶどう酒の生産では有名である。
