The capital of Fiji in the southwest Pacific. It is located on the southeast coast of Viti Levu, the main island of the Fiji archipelago. It has a good port and has long flourished as a free port at the crossroads of the Pacific Ocean, and nowadays luxury cruise ships stop here on round-the-world trips. Population: 177,300 (2003 estimate). Until Fiji gained independence in 1970, it was the home of the British colonial government, and the British Governor-General who controlled the Southwest Pacific was stationed there. As a result, there are many British banks, trading companies, and department stores. Also, since the end of the 19th century, many Indians have flowed in to work on sugar cane plantations, and the population composition is such that Indian Fijians outnumber Fijians. Copra, sugar, and fruit are exported, and there is also a palm oil factory. There is also the University of the South Pacific, the Carnegie Library, a museum, and a botanical garden, and it is a popular tourist destination.
