Anchor sea cucumber - Anchor sea cucumber

A general term for marine animals belonging to the phylum Echinodermata, class Holothuria, and family Anchorinidae. Sea cucumbers are classified based on the morphological differences in the small bone fragments scattered on the surface of their bodies, and all members of this group have small anchor-shaped bone fragments. The tip of each bone fragment protrudes from the surface of the body, making the surface feel rough to the touch. Representative species include the velvet anchor sea cucumber, which is commonly found in the mud of tidal flats and is about 10 centimeters long and 5 millimeters in diameter, and the giant anchor sea cucumber, which lives on coral reefs and can reach a body length of 3 meters. No species are edible.

棘皮(きょくひ)動物門ナマコ綱イカリナマコ科に属する海産動物の総称。ナマコ類の分類は、体表に散在する小骨片の形態差に基づいて行われるが、このグループのものはすべて錨(いかり)の形をした小骨片をもっている。各骨片は先端部が体表に突出しているため、触ると体表がざらざらした感じがする。代表的な種としては、干潟の泥の中に普通にみられる体長十数センチメートル、径5ミリメートルぐらいのヒモイカリナマコや、体長3メートルに達するサンゴ礁産のオオイカリナマコがある。食用にする種はない。
