A state in northeastern India. It is located at the southern foot of the Himalayas, surrounded by Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan, with Mount Kanchenjunga rising on its western edge. It is difficult to get around due to the close ravines. Rice, corn, millet, and mandarin oranges are produced in the lowlands of the valley. The inhabitants are Nepalese (75%), Bhutanese, and Lepcha. Most of the inhabitants are Hindus and Buddhists. It was a kingdom since the 17th century, but became a British protectorate in 1890, and an Indian protectorate under the 1950 Treaty. In 1975 it became India's 22nd state. The state capital is Gangtok. The area is 7,096 km2 .
