1333?‐79 King of Castile. Reigned 1369-79. An illegitimate son of Alfonso XI, he led a rebellion with some of the nobles after his half-brother Pedro I ascended to the throne. After being defeated once, he tried again with the support of Aragon, France, and the Papacy, and in 1369 he stabbed Pedro to death with his own hands, ascending to the throne and founding the Trastámara dynasty. He became king in an unusual way, forming an alliance with France in diplomacy, while at home he tried to protect himself by granting many estates to various lords, severely undermining the economic power of the monarchy and causing later chaos.
