King of Castile. Reigned 1369-79. An illegitimate son of Alfonso XI, he led a rebellion with some of the nobles after his half-brother Pedro I ascended to the throne. After being defeated once, he tried again with the support of Aragon, France, and the Papacy, and in 1369 he stabbed Pedro to death with his own hands, ascending to the throne and founding the Trastámara dynasty. He became king in an unusual way, forming an alliance with France in diplomacy, while at home he tried to protect himself by granting many estates to various lords, severely undermining the economic power of the monarchy and causing later chaos.

カスティリャ王。在位1369‐79年。アルフォンソ11世の庶子で，異母兄ペドロ1世の即位後に貴族の一部を率いて反乱を起こした。いったん敗れた後，アラゴン，フランス，ローマ教皇庁の支援を受けて再度挑戦，1369年自らの手でペドロを刺殺して即位，トラスタマラ朝を開いた。異常な形で王となった彼は，外交ではフランスと同盟を結ぶ一方，国内では諸侯に多くの所領を与えることで保身を図って王権の経済力を著しくそこない，後の混乱の原因を作った。
