Kabir - Kabir (English spelling)

Kabir - Kabir (English spelling)

A religious leader in North India. He was born as an illegitimate son of a Brahmin and was raised by a poor Muslim weaver couple. While studying under Ramananda, a Hindu Vaishnava scholar, he critically integrated Hinduism and Islam, based on absolute devotion to one God (bhakti). He preached that "There is only one God, even if he is called by many names. God resides not in heaven or temples, but in the heart. All that is needed is to chant the name of God and to constantly remember Him in one's mind. There is no need for bathing, pilgrimages, or scriptures." He did not lead a special life as a religious leader, but continued to be a weaver throughout his life. Some of the vast amount of poetry he created was compiled by his disciples as "Bijak." In addition, since it is said that Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, was greatly influenced by him, many of his poems are included in the fundamental scripture of the religion, "Adi Granth."
