An Islamic kingdom that existed in Indonesia, mainly in Central Java, from the late 1580s until 1755. To distinguish it from the Hindu kingdom of Mataram of the same name, it is sometimes called Mataram Islam or Islam Mataram. The founder, Senapati, is a semi-legendary figure who died in 1601 while repeatedly attempting expeditions to the northeastern coastal regions. During the reign of his son, Panembahan Seda Ing Kelapiak (reigned 1601-13), the royal palace was built at Kota Gede, south of Yogyakarta, and he also devoted himself to promoting literature while expanding the kingdom eastward.
