The last Frankish king of the Merovingian dynasty. Reigned from 743 to 751. His life is described at the beginning of Einhard's "Life of Charlemagne." He lived in a barn, was surrounded by a few servants, went out in an oxcart, and all administrative matters, both domestic and foreign, were at the mercy of Pepin III. In 751, he was forced to abdicate at the behest of Pope Zacharias, and ended his life in the Abbey of Saint-Bertin. [Mori Hiroshi]
