〘名〙 (「鍛冶」はあて字。「かなうち(金打)」が「かぬち」となり、さらに「かぢ」と変化した語) 金属を打ちきたえて、いろいろの器具をつくること。また、それを仕事とする人。鍛冶屋。鍛冶職人。※霊異記(810‐824)中「聞けば、唯鍛(カヂ)する音のみ有り〈国会図書館本訓釈 鍛 カチスル〉」※中右記‐嘉保二年(1095)九月一七日「則召集仮治等」[語誌](1)古くから社寺の創建や、修復に携わり、釘、鎹(かすがい)などを製作した。興福寺、春日社、東大寺には、鎌倉初期にすでに鍛冶寄人が活動し、諸国にも給田を保証されたものが散在し、一三世紀初めには後鳥羽院自身が自らに直属する刀鍛冶を組織していたといわれる。
(2)一五世紀後半頃の「高松宮本東北院職人歌合五番本」の鍛冶像には、鞴とともに向槌を振る弟子が描かれている(二人像)。近世に入ると刀鍛冶だけでなく、鉄砲鍛冶や庖丁鍛冶、鍬などを作る野鍛冶の活動も盛んになった。

かぬち【鍛冶】

〘名〙 (「かねうち(金打)」の変化した語) 金属を打ち鍛えること。また、その人。鍛冶(かじ)。上代にはこれを職業とする鍛冶部(かぬちべ)が豪族に属していた。※書紀(720)垂仁三九年一〇月(北野本室町時代訓)「鍛(カヌチ)名は河上を喚して、太刀一千口を作らしむ」
