…the capillaries that are located most peripherally to the heart, which is the center of circulation, are the capillaries that continue to the branches of the dorsal aorta. Similar capillary networks found in the liver and gills are not capillaries, but are formed during the developmental process when a part of the middle of a vein or artery is subdivided. They are a type of venous or arterial network that has developed in a specialized functional area, and are known as "monstrous networks." Veins that end in such capillary networks are called portal veins.
