[Died] August 23, 1863, Yalta. Russian actor. Born to serfs, he initially worked at the Kursk Theater, but his talent was recognized and he became a full-time employee at the Maly Theater in Moscow in 1823. He formed friendships with Gogol and Belinsky, and with his performances as Farmasov in Sorrow for Wisdom and the Mayor in The Inspector General, he paved the way for realism in Russian theater.
